Mast General Store is a group of North Carolina stores, the original of which was opened in 1883 as a general store - their site has a fantastic history complete with photos - it's definitely worth a 
read. Around 1973, the original store was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as one of the finest remaining examples of an old country general store. Check out their site.
