A vignette on the climbing life – "It's good to see you"

As I walked down the street of a small mountain town, a friend came into view. Smiles appeared on both of our faces as we got closer to each other. We hugged, and she said, “It’s good to see you.”

I remember this day vividly because we had lost yet another mutual climber friend just months before, and it was hard not to be drawn back into that moment when seeing her. I replied, “It’s good to see you, too.”

And she replied back, “No, I mean it, it really is good to see you.”

Approaching the Matterhorn with climbing friends

We didn’t really need to say anything other than that. From one climber to the other, it was enough that we both understood the hurt of another loss to our tribe. The pursuit we have is dangerous. We all understand this. But the draw to the mountains is greater. And the friendships, even greater. So to all of you mountain goers out there…

It's good to see you.
